LOL'S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION WALK

Sunday Feb 29th

PHOTOS BY RAY, LOL & TONY (click to enlarge)

The snow had fallen a couple of days before and was followed by a weekend of perfect sunshine.

It was cold but sparkling and really warm when you were out of the wind. Over thirty people and three dogs gathered in Rhayader including a seven year old, several teenagers and Van, older even than Lol!

The route took us first into some woods, where the wood-ants were retreated deep into their piles of needles.

We stopped for a while on a bank under the trees.

Next bridle-ways and old tracks (one had drifts of birthday icing)

Icing-sugar Lane

led us to a ruined traditional long-house at the foot of the mountain, beside the gate onto the open hill. We stopped here too.

This Way Next

Through the gate a steep track took us half way up the mountain where a stream fell over two falls. Here we stopped for lunch.

Lol climbed a tree for a good view of the longer drop.

We carried on up and onto the plateau where a lone group of trees marked the ruins of an old enclosure - Pantyllyn.

Crossing the plateau we reached an outcrop beside the main track which crossed the mountain.

Above this stands the trig point with the longest views . Some of us went there too.

Finally we turned round and took the main track across to the Saeth Maen standing stone on Dderw Hill.

And then followed the ridge down the hill into Rhayader as the sun dropped purples and pinks onto the snow.

Everyone who could make it was invited back to a Ant & Gina’s where lots of lovely food awaited and we all feasted. It was a wonderful celebration. Tamlyn who was working all day at Wetherspoon’s in Hereford, caught the last bus to Llandrindod and joined in the evening. At midnight I was 60.
